10.07.2023 European Vector of Oncology Development in Ukraine (On June 14 – 16, 2023, the 45th meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI)

On June 14 – 16, 2023, the 45th meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the award of the first Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of radioactivity to Marie Skadovska-Curie, was held in Paris.

More than 130 leading European specialized cancer institutions took part in the OECI 2023 Oncology Days and OECI General Assembly. The RE Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine represented Ukraine at this largest European oncology forum.

The plenary sessions and scientific conferences discussed the European strategy of anti-cancer initiatives and defined a model of the future European anti-cancer infrastructure aimed at successful overcome the problems and challenges of modern oncology.

The plenary session dedicated to the preparation of the Ukrainian oncology service on the way to the European Union, which was chaired by the OECI President Professor Thierry Philippe and Ukrainian representative Professor Vasyl Chekhun, became a significant event of the OECI 2023 Oncology Days.

On behalf of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna the first Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine Serhii Dubrov greeted the participants of the OECI 2023 Oncology Days and OECI General Assembly. Mr. François Braun, Minister of Health and Prevention of France (4 July 2022 – 20 July 2023) addressed the participants of the event and expressed comprehensive support for Ukraine on its way to the European Union.

The report of Professor Vasyl Chekhun and Olga Rossylna reflected the current structure of the Ukrainian cancer service and the legislative framework for its transformation against the background of reforms in the Ukrainian healthcare sector.

The OECI President Professor Thierry Philippe in his report expressed the active position of the Organisation on the implementation of European standards to increase accessibility and improve the quality of cancer care for patients. He drew special attention to the need to transform and optimize the oncology infrastructure network in Ukraine.

During the active discussion and debate, the participants of the plenary session made specific recommendations, proposals and initiatives.

The OECI decision to allocate a grant to support our military defenders injured during the russian military aggression against Ukraine deserves special attention and gratitude.

All the events within the framework of the OECI 2023 Oncology Days and OECI General Assembly were held under the flag of Ukraine, and in the closing speech of the OECI President Thierry Philippe, the words «Glory to Ukraine!» the words were sounded in all European languages.
