Seminar “The Immune System and Cancer: A Battle for Life” held on May 20, 2025
On May 20, 2025, an online seminar titled “The Immune System and Cancer: A Battle for Life” was held as part of the “ONcoLogiCa” project, initiated by the Council of Young Scientists of the RE Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the Educational and Scientific Center “Institute of Biology and Medicine” at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
Fifty participants from across Ukraine registered for the event, most of whom were students.
The seminar featured a presentation by Taras ZADVORNYI, PhD in Biology and Senior Research Fellow of the Department of Cytomorphology and Molecular Biological Markers of Tumor Growth at the Kavetsky Institute. His lecture, “The Three C’s Concept: Current Views and Prospects of Immunotherapy”, outlined mechanisms by which tumors evade immune surveillance. These mechanisms were classified and conceptualized by Lorenzo Galluzzi and colleagues as the “Three C’s”: Camouflage, Coercion, and Cytoprotection.
Another presentation was delivered by Dr. Larysa SKIVKA, Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. In her lecture, “Tumor-Associated Macrophages as a Target for Antitumor Therapy”, she discussed the role of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the development and progression of malignant neoplasms. She also presented therapeutic strategies targeting TAMs in cancer treatment, with a focus on their potential use in adoptive therapy.
